Frequently Asked Questions

What is a lens mount adapter?

A lens adapter allows you to attach a different brand of lens to your camera body, letting you use an otherwise incompatible lens with your camera.

How do I find the right lens adapter for my lens and camera?

Find your lens mount and your camera mount.

The easiest way to find and confirm your lens mount is to know the mount of the camera it was used on originally. A quick internet search of the camera model followed by lens mount is a sure way to confirm what lens mount you need. For example if you have an old Nikon lens and you know it was used on a Nikon FM2, you can easily find that the lens has a Nikon F-mount. This is particularly useful for lenses that are made for different mounts i.e Sigma and Tamron bring out the same lens with different mounts including EF, F, E so knowing the camera the lens was used on is a good shortcut.

If you have an old second hand lens and you are unsure of the camera it was made for, take all the known details of the lens and search the web.

Why buy a lens mount adapter?

To utilise quality old lenses with your new camera, or match a different make of lens to your camera.

There are countless creative experiments to be explored by mixing different brands of lenses with your camera body. Lens adapters can also help your existing collection of lenses go further with any new cameras you collect. So you can invest in a new camera and make the most of your favourite lenses.

How do you use a lens mount adapter?

Find a detailed how to for each filter at the base of its product page.

In summary, attach your lens to the adapter, and then your adapter to your camera body. Put all settings on your lens and camera into manual mode, and select ‘shoot without lens’ in your camera settings.

When should I use a lens mount adapter?

Whenever you want to use a different make of lens with your camera body.

Because you need to use your camera in full manual mode, you may need to familiarise yourself with this before shooting. You’ll soon work out which lenses you enjoy using with your camera. Analogue lenses can provide professional quality glass at a fraction of the cost of modern lenses so lens adapters can help you shoot with better lenses for less.

Can I change my aperture when using this lens mount adapter?

Only if your lens has a manual aperture control ring.

If you use a lens with electronic aperture and no manual control ring, because this lens mount adapter is fully manual, your aperture would remain at its maximum aperture (lowest f-stop).

Works good

Attaches tightly to my camera. It was a little finicky at first to attach some FD lenses I found, but once I figured it out they worked like a charm.

Works great with my Canon FL 58mm f1,2

Just had to leave a review to correct a previous reviewer, this does work with FL mount cameras too. There is indeed an obstruction from the aperture pin in the Urth mount with a couple FL lens that have a slight different shape in the mount by the rear element, but that pin is used for quick focus checking (originally with old automatic cameras).

The pin can be unscrewed with a small screwdriver like you would use for electronics (CRV+2.5), and will no longer interfere with the lens.

To use the aperture you use the two rings at the end of the lens (one has the aperture number and a dot, the other is unmarked except for a dot). Rotate the aperture ring to what you want and then rotate the unmarked ring to align the dot, and the unmarked ring will actuate the aperture with a slight twist from there.

Great build quality and price on the mount itself and happy with it, other than future designs could probably try to reduce the need to remove the pin.

Extremely well built, but....

I got the adapter and was totally impressed with the fit and finish of my FD to RF adapter. Works beautifully.

Sadly I was force to buy a second one and cut off the aperture control lever and grind it flush with the interior of the body. With many Canon FL lenses the lever is a few mm too far out and they jamb against it and cannot be mounted. do about 6 of my favorite FL lenses were useless without the modification. Especially my 58 mm f1.2. A suggestion is to push it back slightly for FL lenses as well. Don't worry, all FD and FDn lenses will work just fine as their aperture actuating levers extend sufficiently far back as FL and FD/FDn lenses can be used interchangeably on FD cameras and work just fine. Just a suggestion to allow more lenses to be adapted with the same adapter without having to butcher it and lose aperture control from the adapter.

Thank you for listening.

A great solution for reviving old lenses

The FD to RF adapter is a simple yet elegant piece of kit. Tightly mounts to the RF camera, giving a good metal mount for the FD lens to adapt to. The aperture ring was slightly confusing to get the hang of, but now I understand how it works. I tend to set it to the most anti-clockwise so I can use the aperture ring on the lens itself due to more control/precision. I use this most often with my 50mm f1.8, but it also works with my 100-300 f5.6. A great buy!
